Debra Tomanek, Ph. D.

Associate Vice Provost for Instruction & Assessment

My piece of the puzzle:
As the Associate Vice Provost, Debra is responsible for leading the Office of Instruction & Assessment's (OIA) team of professionals as they work toward building capacity for excellence in teaching and assessment of student learning.  Debra works closely with the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs as well as college and departmental administrators to ensure that the work of the OIA aligns with the academic mission and goals of the university and its academic units.  She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on science teaching and learning, research in science education, and general education biology. 

Background & Education:
In addition to her role as Associate Vice Provost, Debra also holds appointments as a Professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology and in the College of Science Teacher Preparation Program.  Prior to her arrival at the University of Arizona in 1999, Debra was a faculty member in the College of Science and the School of Education at North Dakota State University.  Debra's scholarship is in the area of science education, particularly in the areas of teacher reasoning and assessment. She also has high school science teaching experience.  

Debra holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in the biological sciences and a Ph.D. degree in education with a minor in the biological sciences.
