Hands-on Using D2L to Teach Online

This workshop helps you get started creating an online course. Workshop leaders will share examples of how others have used D2L to facilitate online teaching and learning. Participants who sign-up early will have a chance to try out a variety of D2L tools (survey, self-assessment, chat, dropbox, content, news, discussions) during the workshop. All participants are welcome to participate in conversation.

Presentation Classics Instructional Technology Tools (CITT): A model for using technology resources to design and manage medium to large (30-1000+ student) lecture courses and language courses at all levels. Prof. van den Berg, Assistant Professor, Department of Classics.

The presentation will report on current development and implementation of CITT, the "Classics Instructional Technology Tools" as they pertain to Classics 221 Spring 2009 ("The Scandals, Deaths, and Afterlives of Rome").

I focus primarily on the employment of "Desire 2 Learn" (D2L) in the context of General Education courses. The Department of Classics has begun to develop D2L tools for large, interdisciplinary, multimedia courses that efficiently and effectively meet the needs of a large number of undergraduates. The demonstration itself will not be overly technical, but will instead assess logistical and pedagogical constraints and opportunities for technology in the UofA environment. I will also address the future directions of this project and its potential applicability on a larger scale across campus and beyond.

Issues discussed include:

1) Extensive use of D2L's Question Library (including sharing across courses, instructors, and departments).

2) Quiz and Exam creation and administration for large numbers of students and for language courses.

3) D2L's advantages for assisting DRC students and managing group projects.

4) Effective application of D2L technology to smaller courses, to language courses, outside of the UofA, and with colleagues at other institutions.

Presentation Blogs for Instruction, Jay Rochlin Assistant Professor, Journalism.

In this session, Jay Rochlin will discuss how he uses student-created blogs to augment the teaching of abstract skills and values (truth telling, ethics, and critical thinking) as well as practical skills (the integration of multimedia into news story telling) that are necessary for new professionals in journalism as well as many other fields.

Rochlin is an assistant professor of practice in the University of Arizona School of Journalism. He teaches a senior level course whose students produce Border Beat, an online publication that covers the U.S. Mexico Border. In addition to writing and producing news for the publication in a variety of formats, each student is required to select a border-related topic and create a blog about that topic and update it weekly.

In 2007, Border Beat was recognized by the Online News Association (ONA) as the best student produced online news publication in the country.

Tours will include information on:

Gear-to-Go OSCR offers a variety of equipment (referred to as Gear-to-Go) that can be checked out by UA students for course projects. All OSCR equipment must be used for a learning endeavor that does not involve for-pay work. Most of the equipment is checked out through the Gear Center. http://www.oscr.arizona.edu/gc

AZ Live AZ-LIVE is a room where university researchers, faculty and students can be immersed in a three-dimensional, computer-generated world. The environment combines 3-D computer graphics, stereoscopic projection technology, acoustical tracking devices and four-channel audio to create the illusion of being present in a virtual world.

Virtual Reality Annex The Virtual Reality Annex is one of OSCR's Multimedia Labs. You can check out VR Gear-To-Go and request VR content for any academic endeavor that would benefit from this technology. We can show you how to create both object and panorama VR movies or, in some cases, we will do the work for you. And it's all free to any Student, Faculty or Staff at the U of A.
